As the number of individuals living with HIV/AIDS continues to increase in America. People are opting to go with mediums that quickly increase their knowledge of the issue in a more personal manner. Health organizations, books, and web sites are all good avenues but not everyone is going to read a book or that four page pamphlet. In today's world of “quick and visual.” A movie might be the obvious choice for individuals looking to quickly digest that wholeness of complex issues. Our blogger Sergio Mendoza developed a list of his personal favorite films that explore the particular realities of living with HIV/AIDS. These films have been real eye openers for him and will be sure to entertain, thrill and shock you into a world of understanding, thoughtfulness and acceptance! A movie anyone?
1. GIA
One of my personal favorites! Gia Carnagie was one of the first super models to grace the runway in the era of excess during the eighties. The movie follows her to the top of the fashion world followed by a downward spiral with drug addiction ultimately leading to her death from AIDS in 1986. Gia was known as one of the first famous woman to die of AIDS. This film was one of the first ones I ever saw in where someone with such a great life ultimately succumbed to AIDS.
2. KIDS
Kids is a movie sure to shock you! It’s a film that received an NC-17 rating and was banned from many movie theaters when it first came out. Due to its subject matter. The movie centers around a group of sexually active teenagers in New York City during the era of HIV in the mid- 1990’s. Not thinking of the consequences of their actions they indulge in unprotected sex and questionable behaviors. The ending is a real shocker but it’s up to you to watch it and see it for yourself!
3. AND THE BAND PLAYED ON
This is a great movie that details the early day of the AIDS epidemic when no one knew what was going on. I like this film because it gave me my first glimpse of what things were like when AIDS first came into the spotlight back in the early eighties. It’s a really good film that chronicles the fight to figure out what was the thing that was making all these young men making them sick and ultimately killing them.
3. PHILADELPHIA
Andrew Beckett, a gay lawyer infected with AIDS, is fired from his conservative law firm in fear that they might contract AIDS from him. After Andrew is fired, in a last attempt for peace, he sues his former law firm with the help of a homophobic lawyer, Joe Miller. During the court battle, Miller sees that Beckett is no different than anyone else on the gritty streets of the city of brotherly love, sheds his homophobia and helps Beckett with his case before AIDS overcomes him.
5. ANGELS IN AMERICA
My last film, another must see is Angels in America. It became a very LGBT controversial film and Broadway play. Angels in America tells the story about AIDS in America in a very artsy way.
For Beyond the Odds, I'm Sergio “The Movie Guy” Mendoza.
